
Sri Lanka Telecom (www.slt.lk) conducted an island wide community service programme recently to commemorate the Company’s privatization 12 years ago. This “Shramadhana” was initiated by Mrs. Leisha De Silva Chandrasena, Chairperson of Sri Lanka Telecom, to celebrate the Company’s 12th anniversary in a meaningful way, by doing something special for the benefit of the community.
Since dengue had reached epidemic proportions in Sri Lanka and fatalities from dengue were increasing day by day, as a responsible corporate entity, Sri Lanka Telecom stepped in to take proactive steps to help prevent its spread. A total of 29 sites that included schools, hospitals and homes were visited by the Sri Lanka Telecom employees from the Head Office, the Regional Telecom Offices (RTOs), the Outside Plant Maintenance Centres (OPMCs) as well as the Call Centres. Some of these places that were visited included The Blind School - Ratmalana, Dunhinda Falls, Cancer Hospital – Maharagama, Army Hospital – Anuradhapura, General Hospitals at Colombo, Anuradhapura, Kandy, Ratnapura, Kurunegala, Polonnaruywa, Trincomalee, Hambantota and Base Hospitals at Batticaloa and Mannar amongst others. Nearly 100 employees participated at each selected location, where they engaged in various activities to clean the premises and equipment as well as the vicinity surrounding the hospitals / schools.
Sri Lanka Telecom has continuously strived to embody the spirit of corporate responsibility in every aspect of its business and social life. Some responsibilities are written whilst others are embedded in the company culture and tradition. The company has been an active supporter of worthy causes that result in the upliftment of local talent as well as the living standards of the people of Sri Lanka. This is one such initiative where the company has come forward to do its part to address the serious issue of dengue in the country. This programme demonstrates the teamwork and unity of the employees of Sri Lanka Telecom. All employees contributed their time voluntarily and some even went to the extent of making personal contributions of items needed by Maharagama Cancer Hospital to make the Shramadhana a success.
Sri Lanka Telecom was privatized on 05th August 1997, when Nippon Telegraph and Telephone Corporation (NTT) invested USD 225 million in the company, acquiring 35.2% shares. Since privatization in 1997, Sri Lanka Telecom has gone through a rapid process of transformation.
