Nature, Art & Culture
Every living being receives a rich bounty of sustenance from the environment. There would be no enterprise, no life whether corporate or private without the bounties of nature. It is therefore a rude shock to the system to observe how blatantly we take nature and the environment for granted. Over the centuries, man has misused what nature freely bestowed - clean air, clear water, warm sunshine and the bounties of land and sea. The preservation of our natural resources for generations to come, has become a top priority for all - not just for those in the environmental movement but for the corporate sector and for the larger public as well. Natural resources are to be exploited for the benefit of humankind but they should be exploited in a manner that is sustainable and allows for renewal where this is possible. Preserving our physical environment is an important aspect in any modern company’s strategic plan. SLT offers several programmes in the cause of preserving the environment.
SLT has focused on developing a spirit of environmental consciousness among the country’s youth. We will be able to preserve our natural riches for the next generation only if the values of nature conservation and protecting our bio diversity can be internalised among the younger generation. SLT has been supporting a number of initiatives in this area with this objective in view.
There are a whole host of endemic species that are under threat of extinction in our country today-all manner of flora and fauna. They may soon only exist as beautiful pictures. Over the years, Sri Lanka Telecom (SLT) has been striving to raise awareness amongst people of the plight of such endemic species. Striving to be a catalyst for change – in thought, word and deed with regard to man’s relationship with Nature. As a responsible corporate entity, we are extremely aware that we aren’t existing in a vacuum. Man and nature must maintain equilibrium, for both to survive. |
